In 2014, Amazon revolutionized serverless computing by releasing AWS Lambda. With this new technology, developers could focus on developing applications without having to worry about infrastructure. Since then, serverless adoption has outpaced even that of containers.
However, serverless is a relatively young architecture, and like all new technologies, its current implementation isn't perfect. In particular, serverless platforms have three key issues: performance, application security, and visibility. While various techniques and workarounds have been developed to mitigate these issues, no solution to date has been able to overcome all three. That is, not until Nuweba.
We’re excited to announce that Nuweba is emerging from stealth as the first platform to solve the three main challenges with serverless technology. With an initial seed funding round of $4.8 million led by Magma Partners, Target Global, and other investors, we are opening our beta program and releasing a truly secure serverless platform to the public.
Nuweba is a complete function as a service (FaaS) platform designed from the ground up with a focus on security. It tackles the most critical security issues in current serverless platforms including slow performance, an insecure application layer, and limited developer visibility into the underlying platform. Existing serverless platforms require workarounds for these problems, such as reusing containers and logging extensively to monitor application behavior.
Ido Neeman, CEO and Yan Cybulski, CTO, founded Nuweba in response to these limitations. Neeman and Cybulski served in the elite technology unit of the Israel Defence Forces where they led cybersecurity operations. Neeman and Cybulski both see serverless as the optimal architecture for running most applications and services. However, the limitations of existing platforms required a better solution.
Neeman explains "We believe that serverless can and should be the optimal architecture for almost any use case, including user-facing, mission-critical or time-sensitive apps. Current serverless platforms are too slow, don’t secure the application layer and offer little visibility. This leads to poor performance and leaves your most valuable assets vulnerable. We knew we could do better. That is why we built Nuweba."
Modi Rosen, Managing Partner at Magma Partners, expands: "the market needed a solution that takes control of your serverless apps, while still enjoying the benefits of abstraction and the team at Nuweba has used their cybersecurity expertise to hone an unparalleled platform."
Nuweba solves the problems of speed, security, and visibility by designing solutions into the platform itself. With Nuweba, function invocations have a latency of just 8–40 ms, a 10x improvement over existing solutions without reusing containers. Where other solutions lack application level security entirely, Nuweba offers developers enterprise-grade application level security built-in. In addition, Nuweba offers deep visibility into the underlying platform without requiring developers to configure monitoring metrics or define security policies. For developers, this means a completely managed serverless computing platform that offers both infrastructure abstraction and greater visibility.
While Nuweba offers advancements over existing serverless platforms, developers invested in serverless today can easily begin using Nuweba. Nuweba is compatible with all major serverless platforms, and migrating is as easy as a single click. You can leverage the benefits of Nuweba without having to modify your application's code or configuration.
Serverless technology has the potential to streamline the way organizations build and deploy applications. It allows developers to focus on what they do best—building software—while leveraging the operational expertise of platform providers. Nuweba benefits developers even more by offering a faster and more secure platform for deploying applications. Led by a team of cybersecurity experts and leading engineers, Nuweba is paving the way for the mainstream adoption of serverless technology.
