We compared our favorite Game of Thrones characters to AWS services to simplify the complexity of cloud architecture.

*No season 8 spoilers!*
Game of Thrones isn’t short of exciting.
You might not own dragons or engage in kingdom politics, but we hope you find your cloud architecture as interesting and addicting as Game of Thrones. It may seem like a stretch but we’ve found quite a few similarities between the characters of our favorite series and the characteristics of one of our favorite cloud providers. Ahead of the series finale, we were wondering: If Game of Thrones characters were AWS services, which services would they be?
Arya Stark - IAM Roles. Protects her family by wearing different faces and roles Defends her loved ones and is deadly to enemies.
Jaime Lannister - Aurora. “King’s slayer”. Killing the Oracle, king of DB. Be careful not to lose a hand when migrating.
The Targaryens - EC2. A long line of strong kings reigning over the seven kingdoms for a long period of time, their legacy will be remembered.
Ravens - SNS. Fast and efficient way to send messages across the seven kingdoms.
John Snow - Lambda. The new kid, but for many, the series hero. Heir to the Iron Throne and the future of Westeros. Summoned upon demand, died when finished with his part, but revived (reinvoked) due to a new demand. Stateless = “Knows nothing”.
Daenerys Targaryen - Fargate. Moves large armies of containers across the world. (Minus the dragons)
Hodor - Glacier. Big, moves slowly, but can handle very large amounts of weight. Gets the job done.
Samwell Tarly - SageMaker. Smart and loveable. Provides others with new methods of analyzing data.
Petyr (Littlefinger) Baelish - DynamoDB. Knows everything. Well connected and is quick when it comes to transferring and retrieving information.
Bran - X-Ray. Has deep visibility across times, dimensions. Sees everything. [Not X-Ray related, but also has an “Assume Role” feature.]
Lord Varys - Secrets Manager. Holds all of the secrets of Westeros and is trusted by many.
Unella - Git Blame. [OK, not an AWS service, but you probably use it] Blames sinners during “Walk of atonement” by shouting “Shame!”.
The Meisters - RDS. Know a lot, but are bit old fashioned.
The White Walkers - Azure :)
Tyrion Lannister - Step functions. Small on the surface, but controls and activates many services and functions across the realm (your AWS account). Very costly.
Ygritte - EKS. Grew up as a wildling, but found her way into the mainstream. Some think she’s close to John Snow, but he’s in a different league.
The “Wall” - VPC. Keeps Westeros isolated form Northern traffic.
The Unsullied - Spot Instances. Cheap army for hire. Large fleets with limitations and can diminish fast.
While we may not be prepared to say goodbye to one of our favorite shows, we want you to feel prepared when it comes to using AWS’ many services. Cloud architecture, like the battle for the Iron Throne, can be complex at times, but we hope this helps put it into simpler terms. So, let’s trigger a John Snow that writes to a Raven behind the Wall.
